Back To The Future’s Most Accurate Predictions

Last Wednesday (October 21st) marked a unique day which was observed worldwide by all kinds of people from film buffs to tech geeks. Back To The Future day!

This marked the day back in 1985 when Marty McFly and his trusty friend Doc Brown jumped into their DeLorean and travelled thirty years into the future to 2015 in Back To The Future 2.

If you haven’t seen the film now then stop what you are doing and watch it! If you have seen it then you will be aware of some of the outlandish technological predictions that the screenwriters envisaged as being part of normal society by 2015.

Although wildly unbelievable at the time, some of these predicted technological advances actually came true! Here we take a look at some of the most accurate Back To The Future predictions that actually came true, some of which we use here every day at Matrix Internet.

Video Calls

This was shown in the scene where the future Marty McFly was fired by his horrible boss via a video call on a big screen.

Although unimaginable back then, video calls are now commonplace all over the world every day through applications such as FaceTime and Skype.

Our development team regularly have conference calls with busy clients or even those overseas to ensure a strong level of communication.

Smartwatches

.

When Marty and Doc arrive in 2015 they encounter people getting weather updates from their wristwatches.

Back then the idea of a smartwatch was ridiculous…now we have gadgets such as the Apple Watch and the Samsung Gear 2 to check social media, read the latest news and of course, get regular weather updates!

Smartwatches are now on the market, but there are still plenty of websites losing out on a large audience because they are not optimized for smartphones. All websites developed by Matrix are mobile-friendly.

Tablets

Doc Brown was seen walking around with a mini computer that very much resembled a tablet. Unthinkable back then; the norm now.

Since its launch in 2010, the Apple iPad has sold nearly 300 million units worldwide. Even Doc Brown couldn’t have calculated that figure!

3D Movies

Ok. We’re not at the point of being attacked by random virtual Great White Sharks every time we go to the cinema nor did we get to Jaws 19.

We do however have 3D technology on the big screen and on-demand service in our own homes at the click of a button.

Hands-Free Gaming

Although not actually seen in the movie, this is mentioned in the cafe by two young boys who mock Marty for playing a classic game called “Wild Gunman” with his hands.

What would Marty of made of the gaming experience we have at our disposal today with the likes of the Nintendo Wii, Kinect and PlayStation Movie?

 Flat-Screen TVs

Those who were around in the 80s will remember the bulky and large-backed TVs of that time. They used to take up half of the living room and weighed about a ton.

This is why Marty couldn’t believe his eyes when he came across one in the film. Nowadays almost every home has at least one!
