Great examples of how not to use Twitter

The world is watching Twitter now to keep up with a certain world leader who is extremely fond of social media platforms.

The downside of spouting off on Twitter when upset has never been more clear.  And if you’ve ever considered using Twitter to deal with your staff, well, hopefully, you’ve seen the light and just won’t go there.  It’s a powerful tool, so you want to use it carefully and strategically.

Twitter Ads: the good, the bad and the branding!

Here are a few ways to use Twitter to effectively promote your brand.

  • When you publish a new blog post, tweet about it. Don’t just tweet once.  Pay attention to the different times your target audience is online and tweet slightly different messages at different times linking to your blog post.
  • Use Twitter to announce special offers and events. It’s a quick and easy way to get the word out, so don’t overlook it.
  • Pay attention to trending hashtags and watch for opportunities to use them. Be careful to use them accurately or people will become annoyed with you.  But you can make a relevant contribution to a discussion using a popular hashtag, it can be very effective.  Watch for what is trending in your industry and for hashtags related to events or seasons relevant to you.
  • Stay focused. Your business account should be strictly for business.  Absolutely you can have some fun, but keep it focused on your industry.
  • Follow the leaders. Learn who the biggest influencers are on Twitter relevant to your business and follow them.  Retweet information they share that is important to your followers in moderation.  Don’t be an echo, but do share the best stuff.
  • Balance your automated and manual activity. Don’t just queue up your automated messages and ignore them.  To engage customers, you must be engaged.  Social media is all about engagement, not just broadcasting.
  • Try video. Video is extremely popular, and you can use it on Twitter.  Why not try it and see what reaction you get?

The Pros and Cons of Twitter
