Watch the World Live on Periscope!

What is Periscope?

Periscope is Twitter’s new live-streaming, live-broadcasting app and it is taking social media by storm allowing you to watch and broadcast live videos.

Want to see people hanging out by the Taj Mahal? Or see people drawing cartoons in New York? Or tune into the pandas at Dublin zoo? You can now browse the map on Periscope and jump into people’s live streams! This app is growing rapidly and has signed up 10 million people in 4 months.

It’s an interactive app that lets you comment on the live video you are watching or broadcasting. It allows your audience to dictate what they want to see on your video or ask questions. You are now able to tell your story to a Real-Time global audience. Traditional social media like live tweeting felt a little disconnected, but this is a truly live experience between your digital and offline audience.

We can now download the app, sign in with our Twitter account or phone number and with one click of a button stream live video. It will also post the link onto your Twitter to share with your Twitter community and from that moment anybody that’s in your Twitter community can click that link and watch whatever you’re recording on their phones.

You do not have to be a user of the app in order to be able to see the stream. Anybody can technically watch the live video stream from the link, however, the user experience is better using the app. The ability to watch it on your phone is something that’s very powerful.

Who is using Periscope?

There are businesses and people who are already taking the opportunity to do innovative things. The world number 2 Roger Federer proved a hit at Wimbledon by giving a guided tour of the All England Club. Meath GAA also used this to showcase their players training before their upcoming match. This allowed their fans to feel as if they were there.

Keep these things in mind if you are going to embrace the app:

  • Think like a fan. There are fans of your business who love what you’re doing and they would love to have access to what you’re doing.
  • Periscope uses a lot of data and connectivity matters so make sure that you have a good internet connection.
  • Use it like storytelling
  • How can I convey my story?
  • How can I share my passion?
  • What kind of content can I create and leverage using this new technology?

It gives you the ability to show those things like never before. Instead of telling people, you have a great company culture, you can actually show them.

Any examples?

A great example of this is what Hootsuite did. Hootsuite is a social media marketing company that did a great campaign called Follow The Sun. One of the VPs of their talent organisation recognised the potential of periscope and wanted to show the Hootsuite office culture. They used the hashtag #Hootsuitelife and gave access to everyone in different offices at different times around the globe. Throughout that day, employees would showcase the office to show what that culture was and what the people were doing. Showcasing the true nature of their office. They talk a lot about the importance of culture and now they’re proving it. The number of inbound applications drastically rose for them and it was highly successful.

It would be fantastic if Disney took the opportunity to go behind the scenes and show a glimpse of how they do animation or if BB’s Coffee & Muffins do to show people how they make their delicious muffins!

Knowing that Periscope is life, not edited and pure raw is exciting and new to the digital world.
