What is it anyway?

Google has once again tweaked its algorithms, and this time it’s the arrival of Panda 4.0. You might be wondering, “Why should I care?” In this guide, we’ll break down why this update is significant and what it means for your online presence.

Why should I care about it?

Google’s Panda is a pivotal part of its search results ranking algorithm, first introduced in February 2011. Its primary goal was to reduce the prevalence of low-quality websites, often referred to as “thin sites,” in Google’s index. By doing so, Google aimed to provide users with higher-quality search results. This shift had the effect of pushing down websites laden with excessive ads while giving news sites a boost. However, it also led to a surge in imitative practices, with sites replicating successful ones to secure top positions on the SERPs (Search Engine Results Page). To help users understand what constitutes a high-quality site, Google published 23 concise guidelines. Since then, Google has consistently updated the Panda algorithm.

The Google Panda is a change to Google’s search results ranking algorithm that was started in February 2011. By doing this, they said that you were being served higher quality search results. This meant that sites with loads of ads moved down and news sites were on the increase. What does the Panda update mean for our business?

Sadly, for the moment, there’s not very much a small business can do at the moment but as we always say, if you’re doing it by the book then you have nothing to worry about.  So at the moment, your best course of action would be to tread carefully and keep an eye on your Web and financial analytics. Take note of any major dips and spikes and identify precisely where they occur. You should also stay up to date with the latest developments, as more information regarding Google updates and how it affects smaller websites should be available over the next few weeks.

Matt Cutts explained back in March that this would be an update that should have a direct impact on helping small businesses do better. He mentioned how one Googler on his team is specifically working on ways to help small websites and businesses do better in the SERPs.
