Driving Europe’s digital future through EU Code Week

Code4Europe is a major EU co-funded project launched in 2024 to expand and strengthen digital education across Europe. Backed by €5.9 million through the Digital Europe Programme, the project builds on the success of EU Code Week and works to inspire the next generation of digitally skilled Europeans. Its mission is to promote digital literacy, coding skills and confidence in technology, helping more young people see a place for themselves in Europe’s digital future and move towards the digital workforce.

At the heart of the project is the urgent idea that Europe needs digital skills to be broader, earlier and more inclusive. Code4Europe supports this by helping young people discover coding and computational thinking, supporting educators and organisers, and creating more opportunities for schools, communities and families to engage with digital learning in meaningful ways.

A consortium built to expand digital opportunity

Code4Europe brings together a wide international consortium of educational institutions, digital organisations and strategic partners from more than 20 European countries. Together, they are helping to grow EU Code Week as a year-round movement with stronger resources, wider participation and a clearer pathway into digital skills development for children and young people across Europe. Irish partners play a particularly strong role in this work, with Matrix joined by Microsoft Ireland, National College of Ireland, Terawe and Schuman Associates as part of Ireland’s contribution to the consortium.

Matrix’s role in Code4Europe

Matrix leads Communication and Event Management for EU Code Week as part of the Code4Europe Consortium, with design, development, UX and UI at the heart of our contribution. We help shape how EU Code Week looks, works and connects with people across Europe, bringing together branding, digital design, website development, user experience, content and campaign delivery into one joined-up approach.

A major part of our work is the ongoing redesign and development of the EU Code Week website. This includes improving UX and UI, strengthening accessibility, refining site structure, improving technical performance and creating a smoother experience for organisers, educators, parents, national hubs and young participants. We are continuously building a platform that feels clearer, faster, more engaging and easier to use throughout the year.

Alongside this, we support the wider brand and digital presence of EU Code Week through communications, content and dissemination. We lead digital marketing, social media strategy, campaign delivery, blogs and storytelling that help bring the initiative to life for new audiences. Because the design and development work sits so closely with the communications strategy, every improvement helps strengthen visibility, consistency and impact across channels.

We also support key initiatives that promote digital careers and inclusive participation, including campaigns that encourage girls and young women to explore digital pathways. For Matrix, Code4Europe is a chance to combine branding, design, development and communications in a way that opens doors for young people and helps build a more confident, creative and digitally skilled Europe.
